Tracy Island mania – here we go again. Thunderbirds Are Go on the BBC again from this September with a full run of 30+ shows to commemorate the 40th anniversary on the first showing in 1965 . Once again Vivid Imaginations have been appointed master toy licensee and once again a new Tracy Island playset has been developed , this time with true electronic interactivity between the rescue vehicles and the secret launch bases . On the past two occasions in the past 15 years when this classic toy was relaunched it sold over 350,000 units each time at £40 retail making it arguably the best selling boys playset of all time .
The national roll-out of toy line starts end July with TV advertising kicking in mid August and running through to early December in a 890 TVR campaign across Tracey Island and the Supersize TB1/2/3 vehicles –all of which have been totally revamped with new action features . The PR campaign kicks off with a Gerry Anderson media event and press interest will be especially strong with the 40th anniversary angle .
“ Five years ago when Thunderbirds was last shown on BBC we generated toy retail sales of over £60 million in 15 months and had the dubious privilege of winning the BATR Scarlet Pimpernel Award !,” recalls Nick Austin ,Vivid CEO .”This time around we don’t really want to win awards for scarcity but there is no doubt that Thunderbirds is likely to be one of the top three boys brands in the toy business this Christmas and I’m sure Tracy Island will catch everyone out yet again – it always does !”
Licensor and property owner Granada has deliberately kept the licensing roster tight to ensure the property is manageable in the first Christmas . Dekkertoys , MV Sports, Corgi ,SCI Entertainment (video games) , Penguin Books and Redan Comics will also support with new product launches this Christmas
